Imagine Costa Rica 500 years ago. After times of great hardship at sea the intrepid sailor is intrigued by its beckoning shores. Coconut palms leaning by wind and weight.  This green jungle, this unknown territory, fought hard to preserve its virgin charms and challenges. It was an inhospitable place practically devoid of humans.

A leisurely stroll could have easily ended in disease or even death. Venomous snakes, unpredictable peccaries and hungry felines, spiders, scorpions, or simply the raging waters of a mountain stream or lightning put to test any who ventured ashore. The land was alluring for those whose faith guided their perilous journey across one of the narrowest spots on the isthmus where Pacific and Atlantic meet.
The land bridge between the two American continents was a nexus for a great diversity of species. Their migrations north and south brought changes to both the fauna and the flora on each side and provided indigenous forms of a stunning variety. The isthmus and especially Costa Rica was – and remains – a region with a marvellous array of exotic plants and animals.

Costa Rica today not only presents you all her natural charms, her unspoiled beaches and her thickly forested mountains, but also offers a rainbow of modern life and culture: highly developed and treasured performing arts, such as theatre and dance; a thriving IT and computer industry; cutting-edge R&D centers for hi-tech space programs; well-developed social and health services, enriched with an enjoyably civilized blend of the modern Latin way of life, its unique folklore, its legacies and wonders. Guanacaste is the most visited province in Costa Rica for several reasons.
